Lets Talk: Free-Range Parenting

Parenting

Parenting is HARD.

Single parents, married parents, grandparents, foster parents, and co-parenting, all hard. People say, “ We don’t get a manual for this stuff”. Some say “ Just follow your heart”. While all are great points, how do you determine the BEST parenting route for you?

Free-Range Parenting is a new concept or term being used. What is Free-Range Parenting you ask? Well, According to Wikipedia (2018), Free-Range Parenting is the concept of raising children in the spirit of encouraging them to function independently and with limited parental supervision, in accordance of their age of development and with a reasonable acceptance of realistic personal risks.

I wonder what our grandparents would say? I wonder if this type of parenting is viewed more acceptable because of “today’s parents” unable to dedicate time and attention to their children. Have you ever given your child more technology time, just so you can finish the dishes, laundry, work, or a phone conversation? Be honest.

Does this make us bad parents? Does today’s parent attempt to be so perfect that we prevent our mistakes to mold us into better parents?

We always get parents that beat themselves up when they find out their child has lice. They ask “ Did we catch it in time”. “ Do you think I suck as a parent”? The truth is, as parents we can’t and won’t catch everything. Sometimes, our parents flaws make us better people. Our weaknesses make us stronger. Whether you agree or not on Free-Range Parenting, its happening.

How were you raised? Do you use the FREE-RANGE PARENTING method?
